Overview of Sustainable social development

The effectiveness of sustainable social development system mirrors the quality of life and development in any society. Effective sustainable social development systems are vital ingredients for healthy growth and development of the society and are invariably a measure of the effectiveness of social institutional structures and general impact of good governance.
In Nigeria, a huge gap exists between the available skills/competencies, and the requirements for effective sustainable social development practices. Professionalized kills and knowledge are required to assure focused organizational growth that relies on sustainable social development. Training and strengthening social institutional capacities are essential in having a healthy society, enhance the effectiveness of governance impact on citizens and importantly promote long term value, peace and co-existence in space and time. There is need for training and education for social standard practitioners to improve top and bottom line performance in organizations. These skills and knowledge gaps will be addressed through sustained human capacity building and up to date academic research programs in sustainable social development at CIPESS.
Sustainable social development Management courses on offered at the Center via five tracks that are mutually related as they constitute a bottom-up learning structure, beginning with certificate courses up to graduate degrees. This is effective for career development from lower cadre to senior and executive cadre in the civil service and private organizations. The five tracks are well designed with elementary courses building up to advanced studies and research based degrees capable of breeding lower cadre practitioners, policymakers, academics among others.

Courses in Environmental sustainability

Track A: Executive Education and Short Courses

The Executive education and short courses are designed to develop human capacity in Sustainable social development in public and private businesses and to produce competent and intellectually sound Sustainable social development professionals. Both are inter-disciplinary professional and proficiency capacity building programmes for developing human resources and capacity in the practice of Sustainable social development in both the public and private sectors.

The objectives of the executive education program and short training courses in Sustainable social development are to:
  1. 1. Enhance the knowledge of Sustainable social development practitioners on the principles and theory of Sustainable social development and on field application of these in the practice of the profession.
    2. Scale up the skills of participants for effective service in the fields of Sustainable social development.
    3. Promote improvements in the quality of human resources in the field of Sustainable social development and
    4. Provide clarity in the practice of Sustainable social development and a basis for direction and focus for such professionals in their various fields.

Target Audience

The training programs are intended for capacity development of public servants, private and civil society personnel, graduates and the unemployed who are taking on Sustainable social development responsibilities or who wish to acquire professional skills in Sustainable social development.
Executive Education Course: Assistant Directors and above in relevant ministries.
Certificate Course: All professionals in the civil service, private sector, civil society organizations at all levels.

Modular Courses

The Courses are designed in discrete modules covering various aspects of sustainable social development. Participants are free to choose any of the modules as often as they are mounted and at their convenience;

    10. Sustainable social development and Family Welfare.

Duration

Executive education program in Sustainable social development will last for one week or five work days. Other short courses should last for a minimum of two weeks and should involve course work and field work as well as a capstone project submitted for evaluation prior to completion.

Track B: Advanced Certificate in Sustainable social development

The Advanced Certificate programme in Sustainable social development will provide opportunities for preliminary knowledge and skill acquisition for a career in the private and public sectors in national and global economies. The aim is to enhance the capacity of learners in sustainable social development-related problem solving. Learners will be able to understand basic principles, concepts and methodology of sustainable social development. The underlying philosophy of the Advanced Certificate in sustainable social development is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with sufficient foundation knowledge and capacity to be able to provide solutions to contemporary social issues.

The major objectives of the programme are to:
  1. 1. Equip students with foundation knowledge of sustainable social development, application of theories, models, methods and approach
    2. Cultivate in students the ability to apply sustainable social development basic knowledge to understanding of growing societal problems, and
    3. Expose students to appropriate basic standards in socio-cultural, legal, economic and environmental contexts among others.

Course Duration

The Advanced Certificate in Sustainable social development programme is expected to last for a minimum of 9 months (i.e. one academic year) and will include course work, field work, relevant industry based internship and capstone project submitted for evaluation prior to graduation.

Target Audience

Those aiming to develop a career in Sustainable social development, managers and supervisors, safety professionals who are taking on environmental responsibilities drawn from the public service, private and civil society personnel, graduates, the unemployed and school leavers.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for admission to the programme:
Candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University including O’ Level credits in English Language and Mathematics.
A Third Class (Hons.) Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable social development, Sociology or related disciplines awarded by an approved and accredited University.
HND and/or professional qualifications cognate to Sociology from a recognized institution with not less than Upper Credit.

Track C: Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable social development

The underlying philosophy of the postgraduate diploma programme in Sustainable social development is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of contemporary social issues. It will ensure human dignity and fundamental social rights thereby contributing to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community.

The objectives of the programme are to:
  1. 1. Equip students with broad knowledge of sustainable social development and application of theories, models, methods and approaches.
    2. Impart to student’s sound knowledge of Sustainable social development, in appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts.
    3. Cultivate in students the ability to apply sustainable social development knowledge to understanding of growing societal problems in Nigeria and the global community.
    4. Expose students to appreciate the importance of sustainable social development in socio- cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial, and environmental contexts.
    5. Equip students with problem solving skills through sustainable social development.
    6. Impact students with relevant knowledge and skill needed to proceed for further studies in special areas of sustainable social development.

Admission Requirements

Requirements for admission to the programme should be as follows:

  1. 1. Candidates must satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University including O’ Level credits in English Language and Mathematics.

The duration of the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programme will be as follows:

  1. For Full-Time: A minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters, and
    2. For Part-Time: A minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters.

Track D: Master of Science Degrees in Sustainable social development

The underlying philosophy of M.Sc. programme in Sustainable social development is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of contemporary social issues. It will ensure human dignity and fundamental social rights thereby contributing to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community.

The objectives of the programme are to:
  1. 1. EEquip students with broad knowledge of sustainable social development and application of theories, models, methods and approaches.
    2. Instill in students a sound knowledge of Sustainable social development, in appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts.
    3. Cultivate in students the ability to apply sustainable social development knowledge to understanding of growing societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
    4. Expose students to appreciate the importance of sustainable social development in socio- cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts.
    5. Equip students with joint problem solving skills through sustainable social development.
    6. Impact students with relevant knowledge and skill needed to proceed for further studies in special areas of sustainable social development.

Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the M.Sc Sustainable social development programme will be as follows:

  1. 1. Candidates must possess 5 O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects among Economics, Geography, Government, Biology or Agricultural Science at not more than two sittings.
    2. Candidates with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable social development, Social Work, Sociology or a related discipline from an approved university or the postgraduate diploma with a CGPA of not lower than 3.0 on a 5-point scale from an accredited university.
    3. Candidates with a PGD at credit level pass on weighted percentage average.

Duration of the Programme
  1. 1. Full-Time: A minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six(6) semesters, and
    2. Part-Time: A minimum of six(6) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters.

For Extension beyond the maximum period, special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

Master of Science in Disaster Management (M.Sc DM)

The M.Sc. Programme in disaster management accentuates value adding philosophy that allows graduates with different backgrounds to gain focused understanding of disaster management and mitigation that would propel them to advocate and integrate risk reduction appropriately in their practices. The programme models the interdisciplinary approach across natural, physical and social sciences as well as between practitioners and researchers for a holistic disaster management which require understanding hazard processes, appreciation of governance, poverty and household livelihoods as well as cognizance of health and illness on development potentials of the functioning of a community or a society.

The objectives of the programme are:

  1. 1. To provide a sound knowledge to graduates with different backgrounds to gain a better understanding of disaster management and mitigation
    2. To provide an advanced and enhanced knowledge of recent issues of Disaster Risk Management (DRM). As such, upon completion of this course, the candidates will be able to fit into any DRM related enterprise or a research institute.
    3. To train students who will serve as social advocates on disaster management related problems wherever they find themselves.
    4. To train highly qualified professional disaster prevention and management experts for career in teaching in higher educational institutions, research and administration in government, nongovernmental organizations and industries
    5. To equip those who will pass through the training with tools of disaster analysis and sound knowledge of the application of acquired skills to solve social problems in their environment, in everyday decision making, development planning and project execution in both public and private sectors of the economy.
    6. To enable those who have passed through the training fill the need for manpower in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy where statistically and computer analytically oriented personnel is increasingly needed.

Duration of the Programme

The duration of the Master of Science (M.Sc) degree programme in Disaster Management will depend on the mode of offering as follows:

  1. 1. Full-Time: A minimum of 4(four) semesters and a maximum of 6(six) semesters; and
    2. Part-Time: A minimum of 6 (six) semesters and a maximum of 8 (eight) semesters.

For Extension beyond the maximum periods, special permission of the University Senate shall be required.

The criteria for admission into the M.Scdegree programme in Disaster Management will be as follows:

  1. 1. Candidates must possess 5 O’ level credits in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects among Economics, Geography, Government, Biology or Agricultural Science at not more than two sittings.
    2.Candidates with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) Bachelor’s degree in Sustainable social development, Social Work, Sociology or a related discipline from an approved university or a postgraduate diploma with a CGPA not lower than 3.00 on a 5-point scale from a relevant accredited programme in a recognised university.
    3. Candidates with a PGD with a minimum of credit level pass on weighted percentage average.

Master of Science in Social Work

The philosophy of the establishment of a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Social Work is to produce competent individuals who are well-grounded in specialized areas of Social Work practice for human and societal benefits. It is also intended to produce in the students critical thinking abilities with broad capacities to apply the theories acquired to solve practical social problems in different spheres of interaction.

The objectives of the Master’s (M.Sc.) degree in Social Work are to:

  1. 1. Provide professional social workers in the respective areas of social work practice for effective and adequate social services delivery.
    2. Ensure that prospective practitioners acquire the prerequisite advance theoretical and research traditions relevant to problem identification, social policy formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programme and social work services for the solution of social problems especially within the economic, social and political contexts such as obtained in Nigeria in particular and developing countries in general;
    3. Contribute to the development of high-level manpower in the country in the area of social development and social services administration that would fit into the civil service of the nation and non-governmental organizations, locally and internationally;
    4. Provide in-situ training at the baccalaureate level for individuals who may want to pursue higher degrees in professional social work and related fields.

Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission into the M.Sc degree programme in Social Work will be as follows:

  1. 1. Candidates must possess 5 O’ level credits in English Language, Mathematics and any other three subjects among Economics, Geography, Government, Biology or Agricultural Science at not more than two sittings.

Areas of Specialization

Areas of specialization for Master’s (M.Sc.) Degree in Social Work would include:

  1. 1. Community Development/Community Organization/Cooperatives
    2. Criminology and Correctional services
    3. Family, Child and Youth Social Work
    4. Inter-group relations and Conflict Management
    5. Medical and Psychiatric Social Work
    6. Social Work and Migration

Duration of Programme

The duration of the Master of Science (M.Sc) degree programme in Social Work will depend on the mode of offering as follows:

  1. 1. Full-Time: A minimum of 4 (four) semesters and a maximum of 6 (six) semesters; and
    2. Part-Time: A minimum of 6 (six) semesters and a maximum of 8 (eight) semesters.

Track E: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sustainable social development

The philosophy underlying the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programme in Sustainable social development is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in proffering solution to contemporary social problems. Holders of the degree will be able to ensure human dignity, gender equity, social inclusion and fundamental social rights thereby contributing to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of Sustainable social development and Social Sciences in general.

The objectives of BSc. degree in Sustainable social development are to:
  1. 1. Equip students with broad knowledge of sustainable social development and application of theories, models, methods and approaches;
    2. Impart to student’s sound knowledge of Sustainable social development and appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts.
    3. Cultivate in students the ability to apply Sustainable social development knowledge to the understanding of growing social problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.
    4. Impart to students the relevant knowledge and skills needed to proceed for further studies in specialization areas of Sustainable social development.
    5. Expose students to appreciation of the importance of sustainable social development in socio-cultural, gender, social inclusion, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts, and
    6. Equip students with problem solving skills in relation to social challenges.

Admission Requirements

There are three different pathways by which candidates can be admitted into the programme in the discipline:

  1. I. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
    Admission through U.T.M.E. shall take the student to 100 level. To be eligible for admission, candidates must possess a minimum of five credits in West African Examinations Council (WAEC)’s Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), or the General Certificate of Education (GCE), National Examinations Council (NECO) or its equivalent including English Language and Mathematics and any other three subjects among Economics, Geography, Government, Biology or Agricultural Science at not more than two sittings.
    In addition, the candidate must pass the UTME in Social Sciences or Arts subjects at a level prescribed by the University.

  2. II. Direct Entry Admission
    Admission to the three (3) – year programme is by Direct Entry. Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credit passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate/General Certificate of Education, National Examination Council or their equivalents including English Language and Mathematics of which at least two shall be at the Advanced level or four credit passes of which at least three shall be at the Advanced level provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examinations. Diploma/Advanced Diploma in any of the following: Sustainable social development, Social Work, Social Development components and Impact Assessment components passed at upper credit level or National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Social Studies passed at ‘B’ level and above could also be considered.

  3. III. Inter-University Transfer Mode
    Transfer of students from recognized Universities are accepted on merit and at the discretion of the University. Students can transfer into 200-Level courses provided they have the relevant qualifications and the CGPA of 2.00.

  4. IV. Duration of the Programme
    The normal minimum duration of the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable social development programme for the UTME new entrants will be four (4) academic sessions or eight (8) semesters and for the direct entry freshmen will be three academic sessions or six (6) semesters. In general, no student will be allowed to exceed an additional 50% of the normal duration of the programme.
